Harper Ross, a brilliant but socially awkward geologist, is fighting to save her career after reporting a manager for cutting corners at Oceanic Energy Solutions. Sent to the remote Orkney Islands to map potential drilling sites, she knows this assignment is her last chance to prove her worth. While hiking along the rugged coastline, she stumbles upon an elderly woman who can’t find her glasses. Harper helps the odd old lady, who leaves her with a cryptic warning. The land remembers what men forget.
On her way back to her B&B, Harper discovers a weathered leather map case hidden among the rocks. Curiosity gets the better of her, and as she traces the coastline of the ancient map with her fingertips, a sudden flash of lightning sends her hurtling through time, straight into 1743 Scotland, a land of danger, intrigue, and rebellion.
There, she collides with Brodie MacGregor, a roguish, charming Jacobite spy mapping the coast for Bonnie Prince Charlie’s doomed uprising. Mistaken for a British informant, Harper is forced to join Brodie on his perilous mission. Her modern knowledge of geology proves invaluable, but as they navigate treacherous cliffs, hidden coves, and the growing tension between them, she realizes she’s falling for a man whose fate is already sealed and whose maps will lead to the bloodshed of Culloden.
Torn between her growing feelings for Brodie and the knowledge of the tragedy to come, Harper faces an impossible choice. Stay and risk everything to try and rewrite history, or return to her own time and leave the man she loves to his fate. But as the lines between loyalty and love blur, Harper wonders… can she change the course of history without losing herself and Brodie forever?
